The One Thing I Believe Makes a Difference in Life

Written by

People talk about success in so many different ways.

Be consistent. Work hard. Stay focused. Be dedicated. Learn new skills. Be smart. Build your talent. Never give up.

I don’t disagree with any of this. We need all of these things in life.

But after spending around 18 years of my active life trying to understand how people grow, succeed, and move ahead, I have started believing that there is one thing that comes before all of them.

You need to recognize an opportunity when it comes your way—and hold on to it.

It sounds simple. But I don’t think it is. I believe every person gets opportunities in life. Maybe not huge, life-changing opportunities every day, but at least a few chances every year that could take us somewhere new.

The problem is, most of the time, we don’t even realize that it is an opportunity.

Sometimes it looks too small.

Sometimes it doesn’t look exciting.

Sometimes we think we are not ready.

Sometimes we are scared.

And sometimes we simply ignore it because we think, “What difference will this make?”

I have done this myself. And I’m sure many of us have. What makes this interesting is that we often look at other people and wonder how they got ahead. I’ve had those moments too. You see someone who doesn’t seem as talented as you. Maybe they aren’t more hardworking. Maybe they aren’t smarter. Maybe they don’t have the skills you have. And yet, somehow, they are doing better. I’ve thought about this many times. What did they do differently? Over time, I’ve started realizing that sometimes the difference is not who worked harder or who was more talented.

opportunity

They simply saw something we didn’t see.

They recognized an opportunity. And more importantly, they decided not to let it go.

A small opportunity can sometimes change everything.

A conversation can lead to a relationship.

A small project can lead to a career.

A random introduction can lead to a business.

A problem nobody wants to solve can become your biggest opportunity.

But when these things first appear, they rarely come with a sign saying, “This will change your life.”

That’s the difficult part. You have to recognize them while they are still small. And once you recognize them, you have to hold on. This doesn’t mean skills, hard work, consistency, talent, or intelligence don’t matter. They absolutely matter. But most of these things can be developed.

You can learn a skill.

You can become better.

You can work harder.

You can become more disciplined.

You can gain experience.

But an opportunity is different.

You may not get the same opportunity again.

This is something I understood much later in life. For years, I heard people talk about hard work, talent, skills, smartness, discipline, and consistency. Everyone had something to say about how to become better. People did talk about opportunities too. But I don’t remember anyone telling me strongly enough that maybe this should come first.

Look for the opportunity. Catch it. Then build yourself around it.

I wish I had understood this earlier. Maybe I would have made different decisions. Maybe I would have taken some things more seriously. Maybe I would have held on to a few opportunities that I allowed to pass. But that’s also how life teaches us. So today, if someone asks me what I think is the key to growth in life, my answer is much simpler than it used to be.

opportunity

Look for opportunities.

Don’t judge them too quickly because they look small.

Don’t wait until you feel completely ready.

Recognize them.

Take them.

And when you believe something is worth pursuing, hold on to it.

Because sometimes, what looks like a small opportunity today is actually the beginning of something much bigger.

You just don’t know it yet.
